Asbestos Containing Material (ACM): any type of building material such as insulation, siding or otherwise known to contain asbestos.
Asbestos: a natural, highly-toxic silicate mineral comprised of fibrous crystals that is heat resistant, soft and flexible.
Illinois Department of Natural Resources: The INDR is located in Springfield, IL and is responsible for operating state recreation areas, parks and museums; enforces game and fishing laws; and regulates scientific research for the water, minerals and soil resources in Illinois.
Drinking Water: Also known as municipal or potable water, high-quality water that is suitable for consumption or utilization without threat of immediate or future harm.
Environmental: of or pertaining to outside conditions or external surroundings.
Environmental Protection Agency (EPA): federal government agency in charge of regulating chemicals and protecting the environment.
Presumed Asbestos Containing Material (PACM): According to OSHA Construction Asbestos Standard, PACM is thermal system insulation and surfacing material found in facilities built earlier than 1980.
Phase Contrast Microscopy (PCM): An optical technique that manipulates the light passage through specimens to identify internal features, used to discover airborne asbestos particles in a facility.
Polarized Light Microscopy (PLM): Utilizes illumination techniques such as phase-polar illumination to analyze bulk materials containing asbestos.
Regulated Asbestos Containing Material (RACM): The federal government regulates materials containing more than 1% asbestos.
Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM): Utilizes a technique using a beam of electrons to examine a transparent sample of material, allowing the examination of the specimen very closely.
Analytical Testing: The process of assessing and evaluating the contents of air, soil, water, wastewater and other materials, among others.
Wastewater Treatment: The process of removing contaminants and organic material from wastewater using various techniques, systems and methods.
Water Treatment: The process of purifying water to make it suitable for consumption and utilization so that the water does not pose any immediate or long-term health risk. |
